ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 5

This design studio focuses on place-making within dense urban blocks, where I explore how architecture can respond to both the physical and social character of the city. The project begins with a townscape and urban contextual study, followed by the development of a responsive architectural proposal. Through narrative-driven design and poetic spatial expression, I investigate how everyday urban life and the spirit of place can inform program, massing, and spatial relationships. The final outcome is an architectural design that engages with its urban context through integrated plan, section, and elevation, forming a vibrant and responsive urban block for present and future communities.

PHASE 1

Phase 1 focuses on understanding the urban context and the meaning of place through townscape appraisal and site analysis. I studied the physical and intangible qualities of the site, including character, identity, activities, and sense of place using tools such as SWOT analysis. Based on these findings, a mini urban intervention was proposed to enhance walkability, safety, and social interaction, while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding urban plaza.

PHASE 2

In Phase 2, I synthesized the site issues and townscape findings to develop a clear design position for place-making. This phase involved identifying the target users, defining design objectives, and studying relevant precedents to inform spatial organization and circulation. Through massing and form studies, I explored architectural strategies that respond to the urban context and established a schematic design direction for the project.

PHASE 3

Phase 3 focuses on developing a comprehensive architectural proposal that responds to urban conditions and community needs. The design integrates form, activity, and circulation while addressing structural, environmental, building services, and regulatory requirements. Guided by urban design theories and contextual responses, the final proposal aims to create a vibrant urban learning hub that strengthens everyday community life and the spirit of place.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED?

Through this studio, I have learned that architecture is not only about form-making, but about shaping social relationships within the urban environment. Working in a dense and complex context such as Brickfields has strengthened my understanding of how spatial design can support informal learning, community interaction, and everyday life. I learned to translate site analysis, social issues, and urban constraints into architectural strategies, where circulation, thresholds, and public spaces become active learning environments rather than leftover areas. This studio has deepened my appreciation of architecture as a social and civic responsibility, where design decisions directly affect inclusivity, accessibility, and the dignity of everyday users.

TGC'S I HAVE ACHIEVED

Through this studio, I developed strong lifelong learning habits by conducting independent site research, precedent studies, and continuous self-directed design exploration. I enhanced my thinking and problem-solving skills by analysing complex urban and social conditions and translating them into spatial strategies that respond to real constraints rather than purely formal intentions. At the same time, the iterative design process strengthened my intrapersonal skills, building resilience, adaptability, and self-reflection as I learned to manage challenges, receive critique constructively, and refine my work through continuous improvement.
